After Charles V abdicated in 1556, the Habsburg lands were divided between the Spanish and Austrian branches of the family, which continued to rule separately but remained influential:

The Austrian Habsburgs played a critical role in European politics for centuries. They fought numerous wars against the Ottoman Turks, defended Catholicism during the Counter-Reformation, and navigated the complex politics of the fragmented Holy Roman Empire.
Maria Theresa (reigned 1740–1780), one of the most famous Habsburg rulers, implemented significant reforms in administration, education, and military organization, modernizing the empire.
